GK5 Studio Tranby: Figures of Centrality

GK5 Studio Tranby is a joint foundation level course in urbanism for architecture- and landscape architecture students. The topic of the studio this year was to explore “centrality” as urban form in Tranby in Lier, 20 minutes south of Oslo. The studio was developed in close collaboration with the municipality and concluded in a report, a presentation and a digital exhibition for central actors within the municipality.

A main approach for GK5 is the combined focus on architecture and landscape formas a common denominator and point of departure for understanding and projecting possible futures for an urban area like Tranby. Through cross-disciplinary collaboration and specific case-studies, the aim is to understand the complexity and diversity of contemporary urban settlements, identify concrete design problems and provide realistic and informed design projects for selected sites within Tranby and adjacent areas.

Through the analysis of the preconditions and potentials for increasing and enhancing the quality of Tranby as urban form, the student groups developed 20 different proposals divided in four main categories: Arkadia, Parkveien, Campusand E18-byen. The proposals range from new urban designs for central Tranby, spatial redevelopment of existing industrial sites and office areas, as well as ventures into the lager territory of the Lier valley, Liertoppen shopping center and adjacent areas.
